- I thought Siemens just did phones?
- We sold our mobile business in 2005. Our company is global and extends across a huge range of engineering and commercial activities, from traffic control systems to broadcasting technology. We innovate in every area we operate and we’re continually pushing for ever higher standards. Check out our UK website (www.siemens.co.uk) to find out more about the different parts of our business.
- What does an apprenticeship involve?
-
Well that depends. Obviously different areas are going to involve very different tasks and roles from the installation of traffic signalling to the move over from analogue to digital TV! But wherever you join us, you’ll learn on the job, from the best people in the industry. You’ll also have the chance to gain relevant qualifications with our help and support.
In some instances our apprenticeship programmes are accredited by the Learning Skills Council (LSC). Look out for the logo on the relevant business pages.
- How long does it last?
-
Different programmes run slightly differently – but in most businesses you can expect to have completed the programme in 3-4 years (with either an NVQ or HND under your belt depending on the business you work in). Afterwards, we will work with you to ensure you go into a permanent role within your business in an area you enjoy and have excelled at.
The Siemens IT Solutions & Services programme takes approximately 5 years for you to gain fully qualified Broadcast Engineer status.
- What areas could I work in?
-
There is a wide variety of areas to work in, whether you are interested in a technical role or something more commercial.
Technical roles – you’ll work towards an NVQ/HND in an engineering subject, which could be in the Power Generation sector (gas & wind turbine manufacturing), Transportation Systems, Traffic Controls, or Transmission & Distribution (Power station & electricity supply).
For more IT based roles – you could work in Siemens IT Solutions & Services – working on the move over from analogue to digital TV.
- Do apprentices get taken seriously?
- Of course. Our team know that you are the next generation of Engineers. They want to make sure you achieve everything you’re capable of, so they’ll be open to your comments, ideas and thoughts. As will your personal mentor. What’s more, we make a point of two-way conversation at Siemens. So as well as us telling you what’s going on, we want you to tell us.
- Is it just for men?
- Apprenticeships might have had a reputation in the past as a rather male career choice. Not any more – and certainly not at Siemens. We’re interested in your talent, not your gender. Ours is a modern organisation that prides itself on treating its people equally, whatever their sex, beliefs, sexual orientation, race, disability or age.
- Wouldn’t I be better off at uni?
-
It really depends on what you are looking for. We cannot pretend to replicate student life. The world of work is a big step even for those who are most prepared.
However we think we offer something special. Our apprentices aren’t saddled with student debt. Instead they get sponsored by us to complete their qualifications – and they earn while they learn valuable skills. So they’re better off all round.
- How much would I earn?
- This really depends on where you work. We are more than happy to discuss this with you at an interview stage.
- How many placements do you offer?
- In 2008 we will be taking on 69 apprentices across Siemens. For a company of our size this isn’t enough. We are looking to rapidly expand the numbers of apprentices we recruit into Siemens year on year.
- How old do I have to be for an apprenticeship?
-
Our minimum requirements are GCSE (or equivalent) subjects – so you must have completed these to be considered and finished your compulsory education.
If you are considering a role within Siemens IT Solutions & Services or the Siemens Commercial Academy, you should already have completed relevant A-level subjects. Please have a look at the individual requirements for these roles to ensure you meet the criteria before you apply.
- What are the entry requirements?
- Again, different schemes look for different qualities. Check out the entry requirements section of each business area.

- When would I start my apprenticeship?
- Start dates do vary depending on where you work – however we would hope to have you join us during Summer 2008.
